Harvard's hopes of starring at the Eastern Swimming Meet in Philadelphia were dashed last night when the team failed to win any of the events in the first half of the two day meet.
Eric Cutler, captain and white hope of the Crimson, lost the 220-yard freestyle to Howie Johnson of Yale by two seconds, in spite of the comparatively slow winning time of 2:14:1. Cutler nevertheless defeated Rene Chouteau of Yale after a very close race all the way.
Jim Curwen did not qualify in the afternoon preliminary, and Cutler almost failed to qualify as well, because he was saving his strength for the finals.
No Other Showing
The Ulenmen made no showing in the other events of the meet, in which Princeton and Yale tied for honors. Al Vande Weghe of Princeton won the 150-yard backstroke in 1:35.3, a new pool record. Art Bosworth was not entered. Vande Weghe was also a member of the winning relay team in the medley.
Crooks of Yale won the diving with 120.5 points. George Dana was off form, but was able at least to qualify.
