Edward Burlingame Hill '94, James E. Ditson Professor of Music, will retire from active teaching next September 1 after 32 years on the staff and will become professor emeritus, the University announced today.

Besides his work as teacher Professor Hill is noted as a composer of many musical works that have been played by the best known symphony orchestras in the country. "Nuns of the Perpetual Adoration," "Stevensonia," and "Lilacs" are among his better-known compositions. He has also composed many sonatas, symphonies, and quartets.

Born in Cambridge, Professor Hill graduated from the University in 1894 with highest honors and joined the Harvard faculty in 1908. He has held the Ditson chair since 1936 and has been professor of Music since 1928.

Professor Hill is a corresponding member of the Societe Francaise de Musicologie, chevalier of the Legion of Honor, member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
