Rumors unconfirmed by his colleagues persist that Newton H. Black '96, assistant professor of Physics, will retire at the end of the semester.
As he is now on a half-year leave of absence traveling in Mexico, Black could not be reached for a statement. He is over 65 years old, often the age for faculty retirements.
He received his M.A. here in 1966, and then studied in the University of Berlin in 1912-13. He was assistant professor of Education from 1924 to 1932, and since then has held his present post of assistant professor in Physics. From 1932 through 1934 he also directed the University Summer School.
Black has written four textbooks on physics, and has been joint author of three other well known books. Black and Davis' Practical Physics, Black and Conant's Practical Chemistry, and Black and Davis' New Practical Physics have attained widespread use.
Black is an associate member of the American Physical Society, a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
