Scoring in every period the Winthrop eleven smothered its third straight victim yesterday 25-0 as Lowell House took the worst shellacking of the season at the hands of last year's champions. Eliot and Dunster battled back and forth, but got nowhere and left the field all tied up at 0-0.
The Puritans capitalized on a golden opportunity soon after the kickoff to produce their first touchdown. Lowell lumbied a punt on the one-yard line, Winthrop recovered, and on the next play Jimmy Lynch scored on a reverse. Dick Loomis stopped the Bellboy drive in the second period and completed one at his own 25, wound through the opposition and raced 75 yards to the goal line.
Carpenter Ends Scoring
Down but not out, Lowell saw its chances for victory fade further into the distance in the third quarter, as the puritan powerhouse racked up another six points on a Dreher-to-Davenport pass from the six-yard stripe. The final score same in the closing, minutes when Jack Carpenter smashed off tackle for six yards.
Lowell has yet to break into the scoring column this fall, but yesterday's game showed an improved pass attack with Hill Murphy doing most of the heaving to Elmer Taylor and Bob Axtell. Winthrop so far has been unbeatable. However, next week it will have to be at its best to outscore the Adams Gold-Coasters, the only other team unbeaten to date.
Merrimen Tough Passers
Sid Dworken and Tom Broidrick paced the Funster offensive against the more spectacular pass attack of the Merrimen, but both lacked scoring punch. In the first half Demmy Lloyd for a forty-yard gain in the second half after Eliot had tried a field goal. In a final hid for victory late in the game, Dunster marched to the Merrimen's eight-yard mark, only to be cut short by the final whistle.
