Seven department and two divisional chairmanships have changed hands as College opens this fall, in one of the largest administrative turn-overs in recent years. Also to become effective this year is the discontinuance of two divisions.
Associate Professor Charles H. Taylor has succeeded Professor Harold H. Burbank as chairman of the Division of History, Government and Economics. Professor Burbank's resignation last spring was believed to be in protest at the tenure policy of the Administration.
Physical Sciences Discontinued
The two divisions which have been discontinued are Physical Sciences, consisting of Physics and Astronomy, under Professor Pierce, and Philosophy and Psychology under the joint chairmanship of Professor Prall.
Remaining divisions are Ancient Languages under Professor Pease, Modern Languages under Professor Jones who succeeds the retired Professor Robinson, the Geological Sciences under Professor McLaughlin, and History, Government and Economics.
Only Burbank Resigns In Protest
With the exception of Professor Burbank's resignation, none of the changes were understood to have been caused by disapproval of the University's method of appointment and dismissal. Succeeding Professor Burbank as Chairman of the Economics department is Professor Chamberlin, who is still in Europe.
The other new chairmen and their departments are Professor Thomson of Semitic Languages and History, Associate Professor Finley of the Classics. Associate Professor Starck of Germanic Languages and Literatures, Professor Hisaw of Biology, Associate Professor Brinton of History, and Professor Hocking of Philosophy.
