"Poland Will Defend Danzig," Claims Karpovich; "War Depends on Hitler"

History Professor and Export on Eastern Europe Believes Hitler Won't Fight

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"Poland is in earnest and will fight it Hitler tries to take Danzig," Michael Karpovich, assistant professor of History, and expert on Eastern European affairs stated yesterday.

Commenting on the latest developments in the Polish Corridor question, he went on to say that Josef Bock, Poland's Foreign Minister has provided Hitler with a way out of the trouble by offering to discuss the solution to the problem on equal terms.

War up to Hitler

"War is now up to Hitler, but it is my belief that Hitler does not want war," Karpovich continued. "If he can not get what he wants by intimidation, he will probably not resort to arms."

Short and stocky, the well-known history expert leaned back in his chair and after a pause began again; "As for the recent resignation of Litvinoff, Russian Foreign, Commissar, I certainly do not believe that it is preliminary to an alliance with Germany. A Hitler-Stalin alliance would be fantastic and it seems to me more likely that Stalin is just trying to scare Chamberlain into a more active agreement."

"Isolation Impossible"

He discounted the belief that Russia is aiming toward complete isolation, concluding that Russia must soon realize that, in her case, isolation would be impossible.

He doesn't blame Chamberlain and Daladier for hesitating to join Russia "The Soviet policy has been ambiguous up to now, arguing collective security and deriding democracy at the same time," he stated. He suggested, however, that a Franco-British-Russian alliance would be just the thing to scare Hitler away from further demands.

"The recent lifting of the censorship ban is merely a testical move and will affect mainly news releases by foreign correspondents", he added.
