By a four length margin over the Winthrop eight the Kirkland boat won the first host in the House crew races yesterday afternoon, while the Eliot crew won the second heat by the narrower margin of one and three-quarter lengths over the Leverett boat.

The Deacons jumped into the lead at the start in the first heat and kept well ahead of the other three boats during the entire race. They skimmed over the course in 7:06, while the Puritans made it in 7:19.6.

Dudley's time in the first heat was 7:53 and Dunster came in 14 lengths behind the first boat in 8:02.

In the second heat Referee Bert Halnes called the boats back for a second start after the first 50 seconds, when Eliot and Leverett by crossing blades. The blame for the collision was placed on the Charles which was well chopped up by a rising wind.

Living up to its reputation, the Eliot crew swept the course in 7:15.3 with the Rabbit eight following close behind in 7:22.3. Lowell had a time of 7:25.8 and the Adams eight placed in the rear in 7:48. The river was so rough by the second heat that the times were not indicative of the abilities of the crews.

The two top ranking boats in each heat will compete in the championship race next Wednesday. Monday the second house crews will race in two heats at 5 and 5:30 o'clock.
