Already the Yale meet, only a month away, is looming large on the horizon for Jaakko Mikkola's and Bill Neufeld's charges, who to date have been forced to run, jump, and fling in weather more fitted to skates and kites than to spiked shoes.
An exceptionally large group of Varsity and Freshman talent spent the vacation pounding the cinders. As a result the squad is in excellent shape for this time of year, except for Ros Brayton, miler, who got soaked in the eye with a shuttlecock while playing badminton; Bob Partlow, Jump artist, who still has a bad foot; and Coach Mikkola, who has a whing-ding of a cold.
With the surprising Quad meet victory behind them, this year's Varsity is an exceptionally well-balanced aggregation and should be a powerful dual meet team. Whether there are enough standouts to enable Harvard to score heavily in the Heptagonal and I.C.4A meets which follow the Yale meet is more doubtful.
Dartmouth on May 13
Before they travel to New Haven, the Mikkolamen must face Northeastern, Holy Cross, and Dartmouth--the first two in a triangular meet on Saturday, May 6; and the boys from Hangover, New Hampshire, on the following Saturday.
The Huskies and Crusaders both have several good men, but will probably be outclassed by the Crimson. Dartmouth, despite its poor showing in the Quad meet, will be a tougher nut to crack; the Big Green has already won two outdoor meets with Peen and Virginia, and has a decided edge over Harvard in outdoor experience.
Prospects for a good Yardling season, which opens at Andover on Saturday, April 22, are not too encouraging. Although the coaches feel that this year's team has better second men in most events than last year's successful outfit, potential stars are few and far between. The team is badly weakened by probation, and hurdlers are practically non-existent.
