With the grand exodus of University Hall officials for the New Orleans meeting of the Associated Harvard Clubs scheduled for Wednesday, speculation yesterday arose as to who becomes nominal and acting head of the University.
When President Conant departs for the Convention starting this weekend, he will be accompanied by his two right hand administrative assistants, George H. Chase, Dean of the University, and David M. Little, Secretary to the University.
Depleting the College's dean staff, Associate Dean Plimpton is going to New Orleans, while his chief, Dean Hanford, is leaving for a three weeks tour of the west beginning Saturday.
Nominally, the oldest member of the Corporation, Henry L. Shattuck '01, heads the University in the absence of the president, but he is not expected to be at University Hall during next week.
It was, however, announced that Colonel Charles R. Apted will not make the Southern trip and will be at the constabulary's headquarters in Lehman Hall.
