Seventeen pugilists pounded their way through the preliminary round of the University boxing tournament yesterday in the Indoor Athletic Building before an enthusiastic throng.

In the 115 pound bout Alex Early 1L advanced to the finals by knocking out Bill Roberts '42 in the first round. Paul Chatfield '39 scored a knockout over Barney Straus '41 in the first round.

Bill Weare '42 lost a close decision to Bill Saunders '39 in the 125 pound group. Joe Passonneau '42 of the 135 pounders won a decision over Don Scorgie '41, as did Jack Bragg '41 from Langden Mead '39. Jack Bronston '42 lost a decision to Horace Bresler '41 of the same group. In the second trial bout Joe Passonneau won his bout again, this time on a technical knockout over Dick Mudge '39 in the first round.

In the 145 pound class Bob Dwan '42 edged Bill Munson '42 on a decision as did Frank Neal '41 over Joe Howard '42. Johnson Parker '41 took another close one from Vorn Johnson '42. Chet McLaughlin '41 in the 155 pound division was awarded the decision from Henry Freniere '41.

Two victors in the 165 pound group scored knockouts over their opponents as Charlie D'Autremont '40 defeated Ben Wilcox '40 and Bobby Green '39 flattened Rolland Maxwell '40. Doug McLeod '39 won his bout by decision over Roger Downs '40.
