Bixler Favored to Succeed President Neilson at Smith

Divinity School Professor Formerly Taught in Northampton

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Julius S. Bixler, Bussey Professor of Theology was prominently mentioned yesterday as the successor of William Allen Neilson, President of Smith College. The board of trustees of the women's college at Northampton met yesterday, with no action announced.

A special committee has been working for some time in order to find a new President, since Neilson is anxious to retire because of age. Dean Hanford has also been suggested as the possible Neilson successor, but it is felt that he would turn down the appointment.

Professor Bixler graduated from Amherst College in 1916. He was a graduate student at Harvard from 1922 to 1924. After teaching at Smith for nine years, he came to Harvard in 1933.
