Mile Relay Team Outclasses Yale in Thriller at Garden

Although his individual entries were snowed under by a field of national champions and near-champions at the B. A. A. Games Saturday night, Jaako Mikkola's one mile relay team covered itself with glory by outrunning Yale, while the two mile quartet took a third behind N. Y. U. and Manhattan.

It was red-headed Jim Lightbody who sparked the Crimson to victory over the Blue, as he overcame a five yard handicap, passed Eli anchorman Curtis, and went on to win by ten yards in the last lap of a 3.27.4 mile.

The two mile combine got off to an early lead, but Manhattan forged ahead to win by a 40 yard margin. It was only in the final lap, however, that Ros Brayton, Crimson anchorman, was hiped by Curtis Giddings of N. Y. U.

Mason Fernald earned a third place in the first heat of the 45 yard hurdles, but, matched against Roy Staley who equalled the indoor record of 5.7, he failed to qualify in the semi-finals.

William J. Dingham '16, Director of Athletics, earned his share of reflected glory when he mounted a step-ladder with a tape measure to confirm the record-breaking leap of 14 feet 6 and one-eighth inches made by Cornelius Warmerdam; the crowd roared its approval.

At an indoor shot and weight meet at Soldiers Field Saturday afternoon, George Downing heaved the shot 48 ft. 9 1-2 inches for an unofficial indoor record and a first place, while Howie Mendel took third with 47 ft. 3-8 in. Bill Shallow tossed the 35 pound weight 51 ft. 7 3-4 inches for second honors; he twice cleared 55 feet, fouling both times.
