SPERRY LAUDS PLAN FOR GRADUATE HOUSING UNIT

Dean Landis' proposal for a graduate housing unit is not the first one of this nature, Willard L. Sperry, Dean of the Divinity School, revealed yesterday.

"Agitation for such a unit has been going on for the past ten years with repeated insistence," Dean Sperry asserted. "I, myself, have stressed the need for some common center for students in the graduate departments. The visiting Committee of Overseers as well has frequently suggested the need for such a unit, naming the north side of Kirkland Street as a possible site."

Divinity Students Comfortable

Housing for the 70-odd students in the Divinity School is provided by the rooms in Andover and Divinity Halls. Dean Sperry said, "The students are very comfortable since there are more than enough rooms to house them, and the cooperative cafeteria in the basement of Andover Hall solves the eating problem.

"Weekly board, excluding breakfast," Sperry continued, "may be secured for less than $5, and I am afraid that Divinity students, for this reason, would not be in favor of a graduate housing unit that would mean an increase in the cost of meals."

Discussing the ideal living quarters for the graduate student, Sperry visualized a unit that would include squash courts, an informal library, a small pool, and both a dining room and cafeteria.
