"Red-baiting a la Dies," claimed proprietors of the Holyoke Bookshop in a sharp denial of charges made yesterday by City Councilor Mickey (The Dude) Sullivan to the effect that the 19 Dunster Street establishment is a red nest" and merely a "sham" through which Communist propaganda is being distributed to "unsuspecting students."
Disclaiming Mickey's charges that they are operating under false names, the proprietors of the shop were forced to admit the truth of his charges that there are scarcely 400 volumes in the shop and that book sales are insufficient to meet costs. They asserted that running expenses are covered by sponsoring motion pictures and lectures.

"The bookstore is a business enter prise, privately owned and not connected with any organization, nor is its purpose to further any cause. We suply progressive material applying to labor and social problems," they stated.
If the bookstore were to close, this whole range of "progressive" social and economic information would no longer be quickly available to students, according to the proprietors of the shop.
