GALLANT STUDENTS STAGE SPECTACULAR FIRE RESCUE

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Three gallant undergraduates saved both the life of an aged woman and the remains of a ramshackle dwelling in a huge fire that menaced the safety of the residents of the peaceful hamlet of Florence, Massachusetts.

Rushing into the flames with axe and hose, the youths aided the understaffed volunteer fire departments of the neighboring towns in quelling the blaze that arose from a clogged oil burner.

Hero of the day was Stanley O. Beren '41, who braved flame and smoke to reach an elderly lady who had fallen on the stairs in an effort to escape from the inferno and was nearly overcome by the fumes, and carried her to the comparative safety of the waiting fire trucks.
