Liquor Not to Be Sold to Minors in Harvard Square

Commissioner Leahy States That Too Many Complaints Are Cause of Drive

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The days of the unlimited supply of liquor to Harvard students seem to be numbered because a new drive prohibiting the selling of liquor to minors in Harvard Square has been started by the Cambridge police.

"There have been altogether too many complaints over the consumption of liquor by minors," stated Timothy F. Leahy, Commissioner of Police, "and we really mean to clean up the whole situation."

Leahy added that the worst complaints were caused by the actions of local girls who were "under the influence" and definitely too young.

In order to give this new drive teeth, Leahy said that plainclothesmen and women detectives are going to be scattered throughout the city to be sure that the local "refreshment houses" toe the line. All taverns violating this regulation will first be warned. Then if further trouble occurs their licenses will be revoked. Several have already been warned.

One reason suggested for this action is that all the licenses will have to be renewed this coming month. Therefore the authorities do not want any infringement of the law at this important period.
