Winning their games by easy margins, Winthrop and Kirkland advanced into first and second places in the House football standings yesterday afternoon as the Puritans whipped Adams 20 to 0 and the Deacons walker over Eliot 28 to 0.
Joe Peden was the outstanding star for Winthrop, scoring in the first and third periods. Phil Starr made the final touchdown in the fourth period, and two points were added when Bob Fulton blocked a punt for a safety.
Puritans Lead All the Way
The Puritan team outplayed the Gold Coasters throughout the game, as Sam Binnian, Ham Daughaday, and Hammy Smith starred on the defense, preventing Adams from getting even one first down. Lou Bachrach and Bill Magruder at end were the best players for the losers.
Kirkland had a field day against the Merrimen as Chuck Griffith, Sophomore flash, scored twice, John Addington once, and Dick Lane once. Griffith kicked three of the extra points and the other came on a pass.
Roy Moore and Dave Grey starred among the Deacon regulars. Washington Mathis and Jack Eberle looked good.
Two Close Games Today
Dudley will have a chance to climb back into a first place tie with Winthrop when the Commuters meet Lowell this afternoon, but the Bellboys will give the undefeated Dudley men a tougher fight or their money than any team they have played previously, so an upset is quite possible.
Dunster plays Leverett in the second grid battle today, and both teams will be fighting for their first victory. A Bunny team that has been dogged by bad breaks, faces the Funsters.
