Koutman Replaces Kelly at Right End for Penn Game; Third Shift

End Squad at Full Strength; Red Shirt for Grunig; Macdonald Practices in Peak Form

By Joseph P. Lyford

The dogfight that has been going on since the season started over the right end post on Coach Harlow's eleven went into its third stage yesterday when it appeared that Joe Koufman, 180-pound Junior, would start at the starboard wing against Penn Saturday. This makes the third time that a different man has gained the starting call at the post, with Jim Devine working against Bates and Bart Kelly against Chicago.

End Situation Brighter

The return of Koufman to active service, after being sidelined with a body injury, promises to ease Coach Harlow's end problem more than at any time since the advent of Loren MacKinney to the front ranks. Koufman, ineligible last year, was rated the best end on the Freshman squad in 1937, and his presence against Penn will mean much to both the Crimson attack and defense.

Koufman is an excellent pass-receiver, far above MacKinney in this respect, so Harlow can count on at least one reliable receiving operative in the line. In addition, he is a hard, sure tackler, and his weight will serve to anchor the lighter right side of the line a little more securely.

Levett, Grunig Advance

In addition to Koufman, another capable end makes his appearance on the Varsity squad after a long injury. He is Gene Lovett, a teammate of Koufman's on the 1937 Yardlings. Levett weighs 198, and is 6 feet, 1 inch tall. Like Koufman, his bulk is expected to stabilize the hitherto featherweight wing squad.

Promotion of Jim Grunig, 200-pounder, to the third short guard post on the Red Jersey squad was announced yesterday afternoon, which brings the total number of the select group to 34. The fact that Penn is bringing a bargeload of behemoths to the Stadium may have had something to do with Harlow's move in adding more avoirdupois to the Varsity.

Macdonald Ready

In practice yesterday, the A team worked against Penn plays as interpreted by the B eleven, with End Coach Wes Fesler putting on a fair imitation of Frank Reagan, Quaker razmataz artist. Bob James took the part of full-back Tony Chizmadia, while George Downing was Captain Harley Gustafson.

Captain Torbie Macdonald went through the entire session, which lasted more than two hours, and seems in close to perfect shape for the heavy assignment he has waiting for him in the Stadium. He whipped off several nice passes during the practice, while Franny Lee, his substitute contributed a number of short bullet heaves that may puzzle the Penn defense
