Indians to Change Offensive Gridiron Tactics This Fall

This is the third in a series of articles discussing the early practices of Harvard's gridiron opponents in the Ivy league.

By The Dartmouth, Sports Editor, and Mel Wax

Of necessity, the entire conception of football is changing this year at Dartmouth. The power plays and sustained drives resulting from Coach Earl Idaik's teaching of the past five autumns, will be replaced by flashy, sudden, dangerous thrusts over land and, more likely, through the air.

Undoubtedly, the Indiana will rely on their air attack more this year than in the past. On the squad is the basis of a sound aerial offensive. The backs are, for the most part, too light for duty against some of the beef Dartmouth will run up against during the 1939 schedule. The ground attack that was the basis of the 22 game undefeated struck broken at Cornell last fall, must take a back seat during 1939.

15 Lettermen Lost

The Indians lost E. Lettermen through graduation. There was not a man on the first team lineup as Dartmouth opened its season with a 41.9 win over St. Lawrence University who had been on the first team when the Indians opened their 1938 campaign.

Key man of the Indian attack will be Bill Hutchinson, senior left halfback. "Hutch" is a dangerous broken field runner, a fine passer and pass receiver, and one of the most versatile kickers in the East. He handles the punting assignment, conversions and placements, and kick offs.

The remainder of the Big Green backfield is subject to change. Don Norton and Sandy Courter are still battling for varsity quarterback. Both are really too light for college football and neither has had much experience.

Krieger Will Replace MacLeod

Bob Krieger will probably wind up at right halfback in the berth vacated by All American Bob MacLeod. Krieger is fast, shifty, and a skilled pigakinalinger. He can, if necessary, handle the punting assignment. "Cowboy" Bu Hayden, Jack Orr and Jim Banman are competing for the fourth backfield position. It's a wide open fight with Hayden holding a slight advantage since his pass-catching ability fits in most closely with the scher... of things at Hanover this year.

Positions are not definite under the Blaik system. A man may be listed as halfback in the program and crop up as fullback or even quarterback on some plays. But the men mentioned above are the outstanding contenders for the four berths.

Line Determined

The line is fairly well determined. Captain Whit Miller will be stationed at right end with either Bob Nissen or John Kelley on the opposite flank. All three are fine pass receivers. George Sommers will be at right tackle and Bob O'Briend at left tackle. Dan Dacey will be at right guard and Lou Young at left guard and Stub Pearson, the only sophomore on the varsity, will be stationed at center. Miller, Young, and Sommers are the lettermen in the line.

Early in the season Blaik shifted veterans Miller and Sommers from the left to the right side of the line, which may
