Opening its season, the Glee Club will hold entrance trials Wednesday and Thursday nights this week in Sever 11. The first regular rehearsal will be Monday, October 3. Last year over 300 men signed up for the Club, of whom 237 were retained after the November quartet trials.
President of the Glee Club is George W. Phillips '39. Other officers include Vice-president William Austin '39, Secretary Robert E. L. Strider '39, Manager A. Llewellyn Jennings '40, Assistant manager Dean W. Morse '41, and Librarian Donald Todd '40. The conductor is G. Wallace Woodworth.
Joint Passion with Radcliffe
Already the Club has made plans to appear several times this year in Symphony Hall with the Boston Symphony. Toward the end of November a repetition of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis," one of the last year's big successes, is scheduled. April 28 has been set as the date for the Bach "Mass." Dr. Koussevitsky will conduct both works.
At the end of March, performances of the "Oedipus Rex," by and under the direction of, Stravinsky are scheduled, and a joint concert with the Radcliffe Choral Society and the Symphony under the direction of Mile. Boulanger is also being planned.
Trip to Windy City
During the Spring recess the Glee Club is making a trip to Chicago to sing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; concerts are being arranged at many of the large cities between here and there. Throughout the year there will be also numerous smaller concerts in and about Boston, such as the concert with the Smith College Glee Club on December 10.
Officers of the Glee Club have always stressed the fact that the purpose of the organization is not merely to give public performances but also to promote interest in the singing of good music. For this reason, therefore, many men are permitted to attend the rehearsals, although it is impossible for all of them to sing in concerts.
