Cowlesmen Sweep Doubles but Only Burt Is Able to Garner Victory in Singles Matches

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harry Cowles' Varsity tennis team suffered its first defeat of the year yesterday afternoon when a strong North Carolina aggregation edged the Crimson 5-4. Although Harvard was able to sweep the three doubles encounters, the outcome of the match was already settled with the visitors annexing five of the six singles.

Sophomore Dave Burt was the only Crimson singles winner. Playing at the number 2 position, Burt started strong, weakened, and then came back to take the final deuced set. Hubert "Flash" Hauck, at number 1, and George "Red" Lowman, at number 3, were the only other Cowlesmen able to force their opponents to deuced sets.

Two of the doubles encounters turned out to be thrillers, as the top duet of Hauck and Lowman and the bottom dunce of Captain Alvah Sulloway and John "Sarah" Palfrey won out in marathon matches.

The summary:

C. Rood (N.C.) d. Rauck 7-5, 6-4, Burt (H) d. Strain 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, Foreman (N.C.) d. Lowman 7-5, 6-3, W. Rood (N. C.) d. Sulloway, Farrell (N.C.) d. Gilkey 6-4, 6-1, and Rider (N.C.) d. Palfrey 6-3, 6-4.

Hauck and Lowman (H) d. Foreman and Gragg 9-7, 6-8, 6-4, Burt and Gilkey (H) d. Farrell and W. Rood 9-7, 6-2, and Sulloway and Palfrey (H) d. Strain and Rider 7-5, 7-9, 8-6.
