IDLE MITCHELLMEN NEAR LEAGUE TITLE

Midway in a four weeks layoff from Ivy League baseball, the Varsity nine has retained its position on top of the circuit heap though idle, with seven wins and two defeats. Only Dartmouth has a possible chance of passing the Crimson.

Harvard last met a league foe May 21 when it downed the Indians on Soldiers Field. Its next circuit game will be played against the Big Green on June 18 at Hanover. In the meantime the dark-horse Dartmouth aggregation has been picking up games by defeating Yale and Cornell last week-end and now stands second in the standings with six triumphs and three setbacks.

Yale and Cornell, early pacers of the league, have recently fallen by the wayside. After a whirlwind start, Monro Jubitz, the Elis' sole pitcher, faltered under his heavy burden so that the Blue is a poor third with an even split in eight games. The weak hitting Big Red also bit the dust as the league opposition sharpened their batting eyes and has dropped from first place to fifth.

My winning two of its remaining three games the Crimson will at least be assured of a first place tie, even if Dartmouth is triumphant in all of its final three encounters. In the meantime the Varsity is meeting non-circuit opposition two or three times a week in preparation for the concluding league push beginning with Dartmouth on June 18 and the Elis on June 21 and 22.

In batting the Crimson is second in the league with an average of .302, runner-up only to Dartmouth's .304, while the Mitchell nine is fielding .932 in fourth place with 24 errors in nine games chalked against its record.
