In one of the shortest games of recent history here the Varsity nine downed Rhode Island State 4-1 yesterday. Blazing the minutes away for an hour and three quarters, Tom Healey, set the visitors back on their heels with a fast one and superb control, while George Hines after a shaky start bent a rich assortment of curves over and under the home team bats.

Both pitchers gave up only six hits. Once only did each team gather two in a single inning. But Healey had the upper hand throughout after his mates had ganged up for a first inning quarter of runs.

After Gannett led off with a walk, Johns punched a single to left. Everybody was safe when catcher Albanese throw Lupien's bunt to third. Grondahl fanned, but Hoye forced in a run when he was hit by a pitched ball, and Soltz promptly propelled two more across with a blow through the infield. Hoye scored a moment later on a double steal.

That was all for the Crimson attack, but it was plenty.

In the sixth the Blue put together two singles and a fielder's choice for a run, and in the ninth loaded the bases with two out. Here Healey ore down and forced Butler to pop to Grondahl for the final out. Thirty-two batters had faced him, five over par for the course.

Johns starred in the field with eight assists, while Fulton caught well and allowed but one stolen base.
