NORTHROP TAKES MILE; HIS TEAM ONLY FOURTH

Crimson Captain Sets Meet Record as Trackmen Trail Tigers, Cornell, and Lions in Heptagonal

Although his charges failed to finish better than fourth in the Heptagonal meet Saturday, Coach Jaakko Mikkola could find no fault with his captain, as big Alex Northrop breezed through a 4; 16.5 mile to a meet record 40 yards ahead of a tired but valiantly sprinting Pete 'Bradley of the Tigers.

Handicapped by a blistering 880 less than an hour before in which he was clocked in 1:52.7, the Tiger captain had no chance to catch the flying red head who cut more than a second off his former record and established himself as one of the East's top-notch milers.

If it was disappointing to Finish behind Princeton, Cornell and Columbia in the annual ivy league event, Harvard had some reason to rejoice as it outdistanced Yale and Dartmouth in the scoring.

Other point-getters for the Crimson were John Herrick, who won the discus with a heave of 149 feet, 7 inches; Bob Haydock who tied for second in the high Jump; Bert Litman, who took second in the javelin; and George Downing who scored second in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

The mile relay team was edged out by Cornell. Mase Fernald finished fourth in the highs, John Erhard fourth in the two mile, Steve Brennan fifth in the hammer, Girl Aertsen, in a tie for fifth in the high jump, and Win Pettingell in a tie for fifth in the polo vault.
