As a thousand undergraduates trooped to the polls, nine men were elected to the 1938-9 Student Council as a result of the balloting held Tuesday, the officers of the persent Student Council announced last night. Elections in both classes were very close.
In the Junior race, F. Austin Harding walked away from the list of 24 nominees to lead Richard H. Sullivan by 25 votes for first place. The other four men elected were Robert L. Green, Charles L. Burwell, James Tobin and J. Spence Harvin.
The Sophomore election was closer, Douglas Mercer ending up as top man with 135 votes, Mason Fernald and Frederick Holdsworth tying for the other two positions open to members of that class with 133 votes. James D. Lightbody was fourth, missing a position by three votes. Harding led the 1939 slate with 193 votes, and other figures were: Sullivan 168, Green 167, Burwell 148, Tobin 141, and Harbvin 139, Close to the winners were the next four men, Cleveland Amery with 136, Clarence E. Boston 133, and Edmund L. Cherbonnier and Oliver P. Bolton with 128 votes. The men elected will meet tonight to appoint five Juniors and three Sophomores to fill out the Council
