Five thousand volumes, including many rare examples of fine early printing Herbert Weir Smyth '78, for 28 years Eliot Professor of Greek Literature at Harvard, have been presented to the University by his family.
In honor of Professor Smyth, who died last summer, the Harvard Classical Library will henceforth be known as the Herbert Weir Smyth Classical Library.
Aside from the classics in the gift, there are outstanding works by the early church fathers, the humanists, and such famous medievalists and early moderns as Dante and Boccacio.
