Crimson Crew, Nine in Crucial Tests

Championship hopes of two great and powerful crews will be at stake tomorrow afternoon as a Quadrangular Regatta on the Charles climaxes with a desperate fight between Harvard and Cornell and a dismal struggle between Syracuse and M. I. T. over the mile and three-quarters distance.

All prospects of victory revolve around the performance of two strokes. On the one hand Spike Chace, praised by Coach Bolles as being one of the best oarsmen in intercollegiate rowing, leads the cool Crimson boat which has thus far cruised around 30 and 36 to outsprint Rutgers, Princeton, and Syracuse.

Then for the Big Red muscular Jim Young is at the timing position. He led the Cornell boat at a furious pace to finish 10 feet behind Navy, has worked his seven sweepers in two weeks of unbroken practice towards a combination that is almost invincible.

All four Jayvee boats will be bidding for victory tomorrow, but again the fight will be between the Crimson and Cornell boats. Two weeks ago both lacked smoothness and a good keel, but after stroke Bill Rowe swept to victory over the Tigers, most observers are betting on the Harvard seconds to take another in their stride.

In the Freshman race it is the Tech boat which offers the greatest challenge to Harvey Love's confident Yardlings. They beat the Engineers by 1 1-2 lengths on April 30 and should do it again easily.
