Harvard Man Sets Up Bureau to Get 100 Fighters for Franco's Battalions

"I've never had a better time in my life," declared Charles G. Bangs, former student at Harvard, as he returned yesterday to Cambridge after serving eight months in the Rightest army of General Franco and set about recruiting men to go back with him to Spain.

"Don't believe all these stories you read in the daily papers, most of them are just propaganda gotten up by one side or the other. I certainly ought to know for I was in the front line with a machine-gun battalion at the seige of Teruel and drove an ammunition truck with supplies at the Madrid front."

Contrasting conditions with those related by two Loyalist deserters who recently landed in Boston, Bangs felt that the aid of Germany and Italy on the Rebel side made things pretty nice. "Food! Good Lord what meals: fresh vegetables, plenty of meat, mmmmm!" and he continued to tell of feasts that would cause even the palate of a Lucius Beebe to water. There was one trouble, however, and that they only got little more than a pint of milk a day, but Bangs seemed to feel that the wines, especially the new spring wine from the Barcelona region, more than made up for this lack.

"I'm here to recruit at least 100 young men of college age to go back with me and fight for France and victory. Can you think of a better way to spend your summer than in Spain, Spain of the Alhambra and legends galore? What an ideal spot! And I might add that the early Spring gives promise of unusually fine weather this summer."
