The world premier of Euripides "Alcestis" will be given by the Harvard Poets Theatre, only "little theatre" group in America specializing in verse plays, at Sanders Theatre May 19, 20, and 21.
Director of the play will be William Berssenbrugge '37, who has been studying acting and stage production in London for the past year. Mrs. Herbert Harris, director of the Junior League Glee Club, Boston, will direct the choral score, and the voices will be divided by the Radcliffe Choral Society, New England Conservatory, Handel and Hayden Society, Bach Cantata, Cecilia Society, and Junior League Glee Club. The Pierian Sodality under the direction of Malcolm Holmes '28 will play the instrumental accompaniment.
Ossorio Art Director
Alan Little, instructor in Latin and Greek, will designs the sets, and Alfonso Ossorio '38 is the art director.
The new version by Dudley Fitts '25 and Robert Fitzgerald '33 has been widely acclaimed by critics as retaining the dignity of Greek tragedy without resorting to archaic rhetorical devices.
Berssenbrugge said in commenting on the choice of this play. "Their translation employees simple, vigorous, and direct vernacular, with never the suggestion of wordiness, and projects with ease and startling modernity the poetry and dramatic flavor of the play."
