Vying on the issue of whether it is the moral obligation of Americans to fight for the U. S. in any war, sixteen men were selected from the Harvard Debating Council in the first of a series of elimination trials for the HYP Triangular debates, held last night in the Adams House Common Room.

Those selected were: for the Negative team: Robert W. Bean '39, Robert H. Beck '39, Claudius J. Byrne, Jr. '40, Lawrence F. Ebb '39, Welch Peel '39, John A. Sullivan, Jr. '38, Victor C. Vaughan '40, and Malcolm R. Wilkey '40.

For the Affirmative team were selected: Lyman B. Burbank '38, Stanley M. Epstein '39, Rending T. Fels '39, Robert H. Goldman '39, Edwin C. Hoyt '38, Donald McDonald '39, Phil C. Neal '40, and John Weston '38.

Edward M. Rowe '27, Director of Debating, said that "the quality of speaking was exceptionally fine." The original plan of the trials was to reduce the number of contestants to 10, but it was found advisable to retain 16 of the group of 22 contestants.

At the next trials, to be held at 7:30 o'clock on Monday in the Lowell House Common Room, all contestants will give five-minute speeches. They will submit briefs to Paul W. Cherington, '40, Secretary of the Council by Monday noon.
