Fifteen pugilists pounded their way through the preliminary round of the University boxing tournament in the Indoor Athletic Building yesterday afternoon.
Since there were only two entries in the unlimited class, the final bout was fought with Henry Lloyd '37, 1B, former Varsity boxer, narrowly out pointing Tudor Gardiner '40 to win the heavyweight title.
In the first 145 pound bout Arthur B. Allen '41 outpointed Gerhardt G. Thiem '41. In the same class, Francis E. Silva, Jr., '41 was awarded a close decision over Roger E. Lindsay '41; Henry M. Robinson '41 took another close one from Donald G. Scorgie '41; and Henry W. Kelley '40 scored a technical knockout over Warren S. Wilkinson '41 in the first round.
In the 135-pound bouts, Donald H. Keene '41 lost to Edward P. Richardson, Jr., '39 Robert E. Schnittger '39 outpointed Richard Witkin '39; in a fight in which both men hit the canvas, Robert C. Cochrane '39 edged William R. Blair '33, 3L; and Denis J. Maguire '41 scored a technical K. O. over Langdon W. Mead '39.
The three 155-pound bouts went to John F. Meigs '39, Robert H. Shepard '40, and Norman Polansky '40. Winning 165 pounder were Roger C. Downs ,40, and I. Tucker Burr 3rd, '39.
