Man Who Managed Clients for High-End Cambridge Brothel Network Pleads Guilty
Basketball Editor, The Daily Dartmouth
While the hills of Hanover ring with hosannahs, Coach Osborne Cowles takes his record smashing, probation riddled, championship basketball team to Cambridge today, facing the last contest of the most successful season in Dartmouth basketball history.
Coach Cowles will start his "regular four," Thomas, Cottone, Batchelder, and MacLeod, the veterans who made Dartmouth scoring this season a team affair, and will select a fifth man from a group consisting of little Georgie Hanna, who specializes in sinking shots from mid court, Dannie Toan, who has been on the sidelines with an injured shoulder, and John Weiner, who was drafted from the first cut list to bolster a rapidly dwindling squad.
If Hanna starts, Cowles may shift Batchelder or MacLeod, the regular guards to center, pulling Joe Cottone into the back court and using Hanna to team up with Thomas at forward.
Making his final appearance in intercollegiate basketball tonight, the shifty Thomas goes into the Harvard game, his chances for the league scoring leadership, which he has been on the verge of snatching for two seasons, all but gone. He now stands in second place, one point behind Columbia's O'Brien, who has two more games to play. But Thomas, for three seasons the mainstay of the Dartmouth team and all league forward last year, is expected to furnish much trouble for Harvard.
Cowles is anything but overconfident as he starts for Cambridge. The one point victory over Harvard in mid-season was made with Moose Dudis, giant center in the lineup and with Dudis on probation and his first substitute, Bob White, out by the same route, Dartmouth has been considerably weakened.
Nevertheless, whatever happens to Captain Willie Thomas and his mates tonight, they have the distinction of bringing to Dartmouth its first championship won in regular season play, a new record of twenty victories this season, another record of losing only one non-league contest, and the credit of finishing the season successfully despite losses by injury, scholarship, and voluntary retirement.
