SENIOR SPREAD EVILS REMEDIED BY COUNCIL

INCLUDES PROVISIONS AGAINST RAIN, CROWDS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Moving to eliminate inadequacies of the Senior Class Commencement Week, the Student Council has accepted a committee's four-point reform program.

Chief flaws aimed at were disclosed last spring in the failure of the Class Spread from an enjoyment standpoint and in the mob scene staged by spectators at the Baccalaureate.

As first cure a memorandum going to the 1938 marshals suggests that:

"The marshals shall appoint a special Senior Spread Committee to execute the dance. Said committee should consist of four Seniors who have had experience in promoting Harvard dances, one member of the Class Day Committee, and the Class Treasurer ex-officio.

"The '4 Seniors' are to comprise as representative a group as possible. The chairman of the committee will be designated by the Marshals and will usually be one of the '4 Seniors'."

Specific evils pointed to in the arrangements made by the 1937 Class Day Committee were failure to plan in advance for rain, which materialized, failure to notify guests in advance of the location of their reservations, failure to make the orchestra leader contracted for attend, and failure to provide an adequate amplifying system.

As second cure, with regard to the Baccalaureate, there is the suggestion that:

"Admittance to the Church be made by ticket except for the graduating class; that the marshals on behalf of the class shall be responsible for the establishment and effectiveness of a ticket system."

Two other measures as outlined in the memorandum are:

"In order to provide more thorough Junior ushering through the spread of administrative responsibility, that two assistant head Junior Ushers be appointed with the approval of the head Junior Usher to aid in the apportionment and supervision of service."

"In order to provide for more economy in the business dealings of the Class Day Committee through the addition of a long-range viewpoint on the graduating class's finances, that the treasurer of the Class be appointed to join the Class Day Committee as an ex-officio member."
