Opera "Dido and Aeneas" to Be Given by Lowell House
Musical Society Presents Purcell Work On April 20
Grand Opera comes to Lowell House on April 20 when the House Musical Society presents "Dido and Aeneas" by the English composer Henry Purcell. The opera will be given in the dining room.
First produced in 1689 with a libretto by Nahum Tate, poet laureate of England, the work has a preponderance of feminine parts since it was written for the author's pupils at a school for girls. These parts will be taken by members of the Radcliffe Choral Society.
Leading roles will be sung by David P. McAllester '38 and John H. Eric 1G. The production will be in costume with a ballet group, and will be accompanied by harpsichordist Claude Chiasson and a small string orchestra and chorus.
