German Student Stays Here to Escape Hitler

Max Kraus '41, star Freshman breast-stroker who was called to Germany last month by the death of his father, was unable to return to his native land because of a well-founded suspicion that his student passport would be revoked and he be forced to stay in Germany for compulsory military training.

Forced to conduct business from Paris by telephone, Kraus recently returned to Cambridge. He said last night that he plans to "stay here for keeps," and has taken out his first citizenship papers.

After receiving warning that he might find it difficult to leave Germany once he entered it again, Kraus found after investigation that at best it might take months of negotiation before he could leave.

"With conditions as they are, no new passports were being issued, and many old ones cancelled," he explained. "I'm glad to be out of that mess."
