Revenge was sweet last night as the Crimson hoopmen swept to a 46-39 victory over the Indians at the Indoor Athletic Building in a game, in which 33 fouls were committed.
In the previous encounter between the two fives, Dartmouth edged the Varsity 43-42. But last night before a near capacity crowd of 2000, the largest of the season, the score was evened as the Crimson broke a three game losing streak to advance into second place with six wins and five losses.
Herrick, Struck Lead Attack
Bob MacLeod was high scorer for the evening with nine fouls and a pair of field goals followed by his Big Green teammate and captain Bill Thomas with ten points. John Herrick also chalked up ten tallies for high Crimson honors followed by Captain Vernon Struck who played his outstanding game of the year, accounting for eight Varsity scores in addition to a strong defensive game.
With the championship secure in its grasp, Dartmouth played a ragged game throughout, which may be partially attributed to the loss of their regular center, Dudis. With the exception of a short period midway in the first half, the Crimson was never headed and left the floor for the half-time rest with a 29-25 lead.
Twenty Fouls in First Half
A total of 20 fouls were called during the first period as the play grew rough with each team fighting for the lead that was never more than four points. Following a set shot by Thomas from the side, Joe Batchelder sank two free throws to put the Indians out in front 18-17 for the first time.
Struck retaliated with a push-up and the Crimson steadily increased their margin. During the last half, Dartmouth repeatedly missed golden opportunities after breaking through the Fesler defense which invariably gained possession of the ball off the back-board.
Little George Hanna of Dartmouth protested to no avail when his fourth personal foul was called. After up-braiding the laughing Struck at great length he was jokingly collared by Ulysses Lupien who rubbed Struck's and Hanna's heads together. The band turned out in full force and one correspondent was heard to remark that their music sounds swell out of doors.
