On Wednesday the mists of uncertainty were wiped away as the crisis in the status of swimming was reached, and the Student Council unanimously recommended that swimming become a major sport. The reasoning was strong, clear, and complete. The council examined the evidence, found the sport deserved to have a major standing in every way, and minced no words in its report. Only in suggesting that major letters be limited in most cases to those who place in the Yale meet was their action a compromise; a qualification it is true, but far less stringent than that of the Yale plan.

The undergraduate body has spoken; now it only remains up to the Athletic Committee to endorse the vote before the proposal becomes a fact. It is difficult to see what reasonable grounds there are for opposing the recommendations. The Student Council has acted well and has taken a big step toward the general recognition of swimming that it deserves in the East.
