McGILL STUDENTS FLOUT LAW IN BATTLE FOR FREE SPEECH

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

MONTREAL. QUE., Feb 21--Taking deliberately illegal action in their fight for freedom of speech at the college, the McGill Union tonight voted to allow a communist leader to speak in a proposed address at McGill, after a long and bitter debate.

According to the Padlock law, which denies communists right to speak, this action is illegal, but the Union in making its decision, passed a resolution demanding that "the board of governors and the principal of the University take this situation (the Padlock law) under advisement immediately and provide freedom of expression at McGill."

Another resolution, expressing the Union's belief that the law was illegal, declared that "a written request be sent the Attorney-General at Quebec asking for the law's repeal and that Premier King be asked to disallow the law."
