FRESHMEN TO HAVE GUIDE IN STUDY OF AMERICAN HISTORY

Position of Counselor Made Possible By Gifts from Three--Aaron Will Start Work in Job This Week

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Appointment of a "Counselor on the Extra-Curricular Reading in American History" for Freshmen was announced today by Howard Mumford Jones, Professor of English, chairman of the American History committee.

Daniel H. Aaron, Assistant in English, is to hold the new post, with office hours in the Union from 2 to 5 o'clock on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning this week. He will act in an unofficial tutorial capacity for all Freshmen interested in the extra-curricular reading of American History, whether or not they intend to take the Bliss prize examinations.

The appointment of the counselor for this semester and next year was made possible by gifts from Dr. Marian O. Hooker of Santa Barbara, California, Garrett W. McEnerney of San Francisco, Calif., and an anonymous donor.

Informal Discussions, Lectures Planned

Plans for the Freshmen include discussion groups for those interested in various aspects of American civilization and related evening lectures in the Union by members of the Faculty from several departments. No formal course instruction, credit or registration, is implied in the appointment of the Counselor, according to Jones and Aaron, but voluntary participation in the discussion groups, attendance at the lectures, and consultation on reading will be welcomed.

Jones will address Freshmen in the Union on Thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock on the new arrangements and the general plan for American history study.

Aaron is a candidate for the Ph. D. in American civilization.
