Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
At a loss for power in crucial moments of the meet a fumbling Crimson mat squad dropped a heart-breaking 19-9 decision to Penn grapplers in the indoor Athletic Building Saturday.
More than one undefeated record toppled to earth as the strong-armed octet from Philadelphia broke a five-match winning streak of the home squad. A doughty Freshman team eked out its sixth consecutive victory, felling Andover 16-14 here at the same time.
Blind Wrestler Wins
Although beaten at both Yale and Princeton this year, blind Robert G. Allman, shifty 118-pounder, rose to new heights by planing undefeated Harvey Ross with a half-nelson and body hold. Ross, like almost every other Crimson grappler, found it impossible to gain the advantage, once down on the mat.
Outstanding for Pat Johnson's outfit was Louis Ach who won a gruelling decision from Morgan Berthrong and Captain Johnnie Harkness who flattenedd out Philip Voorhees of Penn but was unable to pin his shoulders in the last thirty seconds.
Glendinning Scores
Heavyweight Bill Glendinning tied up 230-pound John Maleno of the Philadelphians but lacked the speed and dexterity he showed last year, failing to score a fall. After gaining an early advantage Bill Daughaday undefeated as a Freshman and Varsity wrestler, succumbed to the toe-holds of Captain Ruggiero and lost by decision.
Henry Kidder almost pinned Calvin Hollis of Penn early in his match but lost his advantage and was thrown by his opponent in 7:53. Al Richter in the 135-pound position also dropped a decision in the last few minutes, while Dick Lindenfelse in the 145-pound class never threatened the supremacy of Paul Bond, losing also by decision.
Featuring the Freshman bouts were the matches of Tom Lacey and Duncan Loncope who pulled the Yardlings from behind by a fall and decision respectively.
