Competing yesterday afternoon in the Indoor Athletic Building pool, the Freshmen swimmers squeezed out a close 38 to 28 victory over the Boston Boys' Club, the meet being decided in the free-style relay.
Offering the first real competition to an undefeated 1941 squad, the Bostonians, by dint of their firsts in the dive and medley relay, and their numerous seconds, managed to keep the final outcome in doubt up to the end of the last event, the open relay, which the Freshmen won.
At that point Boston had 28 points and Harvard had 31, with the relay, worth seven points to the winner, still to be swum. But Powers, Moore Stowell, and Bosworth, the strongest team Coach Pete Petersen could muster, took the event in 1:41.8.
Before that Bosworth had already taken firsts in the 50 free-style and 100 backstroke.
Max Kraus continued his fine breaststroke career with a Freshman record-breaking 1:09.4 shattering the previous record of 1:10 which he set last December against Lynn. Although the Yardlings took all but two of the first places, their lack of seconds and thirds, especially in the 50 free-style, and in the backstroke, made Boston a continual threat to a Harvard victory.
The summary:
50-yard free-style: Won by Bosworth (H); second, Baldwin (B); third, Doherty (B) Time--24.7.
100-yard breastroke: Won by Kraus (H); second, Dobie (B); third, Willcox (H) Time--1:09.4 (New Freshman record).
200-yard free-style: Won by Powers (H); second, Cavanaugh (B); third, White (H) Time--2:11.5.
100-yard backstroke: Won by Bosworth (H); second, Kyle (B); third, Doherty (B) Time 1:05.7.
100-yard free-style: Won by Moore (H); second, Stowell (H); third, Baldwin (B) Time--58.3.
Dive: Won by McCauley (B); second, Freestone (B); third, Smith (H); 64. 85 points.
150-yard medley relay: Won by Boston Boys' Club; (Kyle, Dobie, Baldwin); second, Harvard (Mayersohn, Kraus, MacMaster) Time--1.28.3.
200-yard free-style relay: Won by Harvard (Powers, Moore, Stowell, Bosworth); second, Boston Boys' Club (Geagan, Casey, Cavanaugh, Doherty) Time--1:41.8.
