The cruel plight of the Jews and Catholics in Germany is an appeal to our common humanity. If the world knew of an arctic expedition whose members were slowly dying of cold and starvation, or of a ship on fire at sea, all the nations of the earth would fly to their rescue.
This is a parallel situation on a larger scale. If those who are nearest at hand show no disposition to take a helping hand, it is regrettable; this increases rather than lessens the obligation of the rest of the world.
It is a good thing that human feeling should show itself in deeds, and not merely in verbal indignation. The plan for refugee students at Harvard provides a way of action, and it should receive the vigorous support of every member of the Harvard community.
