PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT BACKS REFUGE PLANS

Armed with a letter of endorsement from the White House, Harvard's student Committee to Aid German Refugees today announced plans for an intercollegiate conference on the refugee problem to be held in New York during the Christmas holidays.

Approximately 100 colleges and universities in East, South, and Middle West have been invited to send delegates to the meeting which will be held Dec. 27 at International House. An intercollegiate committee to aid refugee students will be organized.

Writing to Robert 10. Lane '39, of new York City, chairman of the Harvard committee, President Roosevelt asserted that he was "deeply interested" in the Harvard plans to provide scholarships and support for German refugees "of all creeds."

"I have received your letter of Dec. 2, 1938, and am deeply interested to note the plans which the President and Corporation of Harvard University and the student body are making to provide for scholarships and support for refugees of all creeds from Germany," his letter said.

"This program appears to be in the best traditions of the University, and I sincerely hope that it will be taken up by other institutions throughout the country."
