Forest Will Keep Up Work Despite Damage of Storm

Director Ward Shepard Declares Forest At Petersham To Continue Program

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Harvard Forest in Petersham will be continued in spite of the devastating effect of the September hurricane, Ward Shepard '10, its director, has announced. Probably 10,000,000 board feet of lumber in the experimental stands are down, according to latest estimates.

Soon after the storm Shepard expressed doubt as to whether it would be possible to continue the long-range program of silviculture which the Forest has been carrying on since its institution 30 years ago.

But word has come from the University since then that the work of the Forest would be continued with its support. Final confirmation depends on the Corporation which is expected to act within the next two or three weeks.

Shepard described the situation of the Forest in a statement as follows:

"The Harvard Forest has an indispensable educational and scientific task in helping to rehabilitate the hurricane-destroyed forests of central New England, to say nothing of continuing its long and distinguished contribution to American silviculture.

"The continuance of the forest, however, was contingent on the University being able to finance the considerable operating cost of salvaging the down timber and on determining whether there was enough of the Forest left to furnish the basis for a long range experimental program. Neither of these essential facts was or could be known to me at the time of the interview; but since then, I am glad to say, both questions have been answered in the affirmative.

"The further question remains whether the University can raise the additional endowment required to carry on and enlarge the program of my distinguished predecessor, Richard Thornton Fisher. Plans for the program of the Forest and for the raising of endowment will be shortly presented to the President and Fellows of Harvard University."
