Leverett Saltonstall '17, Republican candidate for Governor in Tuesday's election, finds his mottoes for political life not in the contemporary catch-words of a campaign but in the simple word "Veritas" in the Harvard shield.
In an interview yesterday he substituted "honesty and service to the public" for the team "reactionary" which his opponent, James M. Curley, has thrown at him. True liberalism cannot exist without this quality, he said.
The interview was conducted during a ten minute walk from the Hotel Brad ford where he had just made a recording of a speech in the studios of Station WBZ, along Tremont Street to the foot of the State House hill. Accompanying Saltonstall was Danny Lynch, his campaign manager.
Favors Tax Exemption
The candidate for Governor showed a greater willingness to answer questions than Lynch liked, particularly on the Harvard scene with its implications of "Bourbonism," and the latter several times imposed censorship. Saltonstall is an Overseer of the University.
On the touchy subject of tax exemption, guaranteed "forever" to Harvard in the constitution of Massachusetts, he said that "Harvard should receive the same treatment as the other educational and charitable institutions in the state." supporting the principle of tax exemption.
"How about Harvard's relations with the public?" he was asked, in view of recent unfavorable publicity. What could be done to improve them?
Here Lynch drew the line, remarking "you want to play ball with us, don't you?" and pointing out Saltonstall's capacity as an Overseer.
A question as to the progress of the campaign brought a definite statement. "I am confident that the good judgement of the people of Massachusetts will make them elect me their Governor on next Tuesday."
Sees Great Victory
"Make that 'by an overwhelming majority," Lynch added. "If Curley gives himself a 200,000 majority, counting 100,000 for every vote, we can say that."
"The Republicans have been holding their punches and not fighting openly as the Democrats so far, haven't you"? we remarked.
Saltonstall stooped to pick up an evening paper, paid the newsboy, and pointed to the headline, "Dr. Townsend Endorses Saltonstall."
"That won't do me any harm," he said, and Lynch added that there had been such an endorsement every day this week, mentioning those of Ely and Fuller.
Saltonstall was asked what the support of Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, another Harvard man, meant to him. "Senator Ledge has done all he can and I'm grateful to him," he answered. "He has been a great help to me."
