Kirkland Steamrollers Eli Champions, 18-0

After losing twice to the Yale representative in the last two years, a flashy Kirkland eleven ran Berkeley College ragged yesterday morning on Soldiers Field, scoring in the first, third, and fourth periods to run up an imposing 18-0 score.

Never before this season have the Deacons worked together with the accuracy and timing that characterized their play throughout yesterday's game. Both offensively and defensively Kirkland completely outshone the helpless Mitres.

The opening touchdown came in the first period, when Jack McClure, after taking the kickoff up to the 35, immediately ripped off two 8-yard runs through the Berkeley tackles. Then Roy Moore duplicated his feat with two more 8-yarders to run the ball up onto the Berkeley 35.

McClure Tallies First

After a few more sweeps by Moore and McClure, the Mitres tightened up, but on the fourth down, McClure heaved a 10-yarder to Moore. The inevitable result of the steady march came when McClure went over on a center buck.

For the only time throughout the came Yale then assumed control momentarily. Recovering a fumble, the Yales resorted to the air, and after two unsuccessful attempts, Lamoreaux shot a 30-yard pass to Hogan, who was downed in his tracks. McClure ended the Eli threat by intercepting on his own goal line and running the ball back to the 15.

Yale was not stopped completely, and when Kirkland finally punted, Philips ran back to midfield, ten yards from where the Deacons had kicked. Phillips and Lamoreaux then swept around the Deacon ends three times for good gains. Lamoreaux flicked a short toss to Phillips who almost got away. Here the Blue was halted.

Steamrolier Halted-Past Goal

Kirkland came out after the half determined to strengthen its lead, which it proceeded to do by utilizing the Old Faithful running combination of McClure, Foster, and Moore. Cracking off 5, 7, 15, and 20 yards at a time, the Deacon backs brought the oval quickly up the field. The blocking given McClure by Dave Grey, Al Silverberg, Earl Foster, and Moore was superb.

These men afforded an impregnable screen flattening the Yale wings and backers-up monotonously. Roy Moore finally ended the drive by scoring standing up on an off tackle cut-in. McClure's conversion failed.

McSweeney Almost Scores

In the fourth quarter, Roy Moore, booted a 50-yard spiral across the Berkeley goal. From the 20, the Mitres, with Lamoreaux passing and running, were unable to gain ground. Foster intercepted on the Mitre 25. On the next play, quarterback Don McSweeney whipped around right end, utilizing a deceptive change of pace, down to the Berkeley 5. This time Foster put the lid on by scoring over center.

Kirkland exhibited almost flawless timing on spinners and reverses. One play especially was deceptive, a center delayed buck on a fake spinner, which gained consistently. The entire Deacon line fought hard, tackled cleanly and effectively.

No single man can be picked out as outstanding, the whole team working well, and playing as a single unit. The lineup for Kirkland was; ends, Wentworth, Digel, and Kutz; tackles, Thompson and Hurtt; guards, grey and Addington; center, Hall; backs, Foster, Silverberg, McClure, and Moore.
