The usually optimistic Jaakko Mikkola is warily awaiting the end of the season before predicting the success of his 1938 cross country team, although early indications are that the runners will be an improved group over a year ago.
In the first place, Jaakko has a strong delegation of lettermen and Varsity track veterans for the fall season, headed by Captain Roswell Brayton, Bill Tuttle, Gene Clark, and George Gardner. Also two Sophomores, Bob Nichols and Charlie Oldfather, and possibly Jim McLoughlin, will be first stringers when the season opens a week from Friday.
Inexperienced Upperclassmen Help
Most encouraging to the track and cross country coach, Mikkola, is the improved running of a trio of upperclassmen, Simboli, Meyer, and Wing, who haven't had previous experience on the track.
Of the Freshmen, Mikkola can only say, "it'll take a lot of work," and deplores the fact that only 19 Yardlings have reported, since with the exception of the last few meets of the season, the number of entrants isn't limited.
Jay, Sopka Pace Yardlings
In the time trials last Tuesday, Bob Jay and Johnny Sopka paced their Yard classmates and this pair is expected to chalk up a good many points for the Crimson this fall.
A 3.7 mile run is scheduled this afternoon at 3.30 o'clock in the University Handicaps for both Varsity and Freshmen. The first outside meet will be next Friday when both squads oppose B. U. teams.
