Kirkland in House Football Lead; Elephants Upset

Kirkland strengthened an early season bid for its third successive House football championship yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field by decisively downing Leverett 13-0 in a struggle featured by brilliant running and blocking. In the other game, Dunster added to the list of upsets by staving off a fourth period Eliot air attack to edge the Elephants 7-6.

The Pioneers broke a long string of unbroken losses when Davy Jones crossed the goal line late in the second period and a moment later added the extra point on a flat pass to Lynn Pratt. The score came after a march beginning after the third period was half over.

Eliot came back after the half and stopped the Dunster running attack completely. Then the Elephants took the ball into Pioneer territory, and, after being repulsed once, scored on a heave from fullback Don Brew to wingman Rusty Westheimer. Failure to convert left the Elephants trailing by the ultimately decisive point.

The Kirkland-Leverett affair combined flashes of good running and line play with many of the aspects of mass mayhem. The Rabbits, entering the game without the services of two regulars, were further disabled when Rich Rabenold, halfback, sprained his ankle in the first quarter.

By the end of the game, almost the entire Bunny backfield was hors de combat, with Hunt Hamill suffering a slight concussion and Louis Mills sustaining a broken vertebra.

Earl Foster chalked up his third touchdown in two days when he scored early in the first quarter after a 60-yard Deacon march. The conversion was good. The other Kirkland touchdown came in the last quarter on a 29-yard off-tackle smash by Jack McClure.

Today, Lowell meets Dudley and Adams takes on Winthrop at Soldiers Field at 3:15 o'clock. The lineup for Lowell is Wurtele and Hunter, ends; Morse and Thurston, tackles; Call and Hauss, guards; Clark, center; Blotner, Gordon, Lyford, and Conroy backs.

Winthrop starters are: ends, H. Daughaday and Bowie; tackles, Harris and P. Butler; guards, Binnian and Eustis; center, H. Smith; backs, Ford Weller, Senior, and J. Butler.
