Widener, Library had a one-day exhibition Saturday, which, if it had only been properly advertised, would unquestionably have outdrawn all previous exhibitions in the Library's history. For, although this collection consisted only of one major item and several lesser objects, that one major item was the Princess Babs. (pronounced Bah-Bah) of Sarawak, daughter of the only white Maharaja in British Borneo.
The 20 year old blonde Princess, accompanied by her wrestler husband, Bob Gregory (pronounced ughh), and numerous Yard cops, policemen, and camp followers, was being conducted on an unannounced tour of the Library, but word of her presence spread quickly. From all parts of the building research men came running some with card catalogue trays in their hands, and finally located the Princess on the top floor examining the theatre collection.
Her husband, who appeared disappointingly weak, was having difficulty keeping her fur cost, which he carried, off the ground. Further, he displayed what appeared to be an unhealthy interest in the library's collection of ballet works. Mrs.Gregory took a more practical view of things and requested a list of all the books on Sarawak that the library had. Later in the day attendants sent the list to her suite at the Copley.
Library opinion of Princess Baba was unanimously favorable. "Obviously the most beautiful woman who has ever been in Widener Library" seemed to be the consensus of these preparing for the State Government examination in the Government section of the Reading Room--" An exquisite blonde of Junoesque preparations, didn't you think," just about summed up the English tables, while the Library official who conducted the four contented himself with one of the greatest understatements of the new year. "Um rather an attractive girl, I thought." he said.
