44 Foreign Nations Represented Here; Canadian, Chinese Contingents Largest

When a Harvard man goes home, he is apt to hang his hat in any one of 44 foreign countries, according to a report released yesterday tabulating the geographical representation among the University's 8,289 students.

Foreign students have increased in number from 170 in 1934-35, to 249 this year, with Canada's contingent of 51 leading China's 37 and Hawaii's 27 by several lengths, according to the listing. Total enrollment has mounted more than 500 since 1935-36, and barely tops last year's figure of 8,263.

Massachusetts heads a precession of 48 states with 2,870 standard-bearers; New York has 1,325 and Pennsylvania 395. The booby prize goes to Nevada's contribution of 3.

Egypt, Liechtenstein Represented

Other foreign countries listed in the report range from Alaska to Australia, from Egypt to Liechtenstein. England heads Europe with 20 men, while Germany's 11 tops the continental nations, followed by France, Belgium, and Switzerland with six apiece.

Large state contingents are not confined to the East, with Ohio, Illinois, and California accounting for 319, 257, and 243 students respectively. Connecticut is the second largest contributor in New England with 236.

3,713 in College

The report gives 3,713 as the total enrollment in the College. In the 11 graduate schools there are 4,523 students, not counting 30 special students and 23 Junior Fellows. The Law School has a student body of 1,387, trailed by Arts and Sciences with 941, and Business Administration with 936. The fledgling School of Public Administration lists seven members.

Included in the foreign representation are: Japan, Philippines, India, Turkey, Mexico, Bahama Islands, Bermuda, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canal Zone, Channel Islands, Ceylon, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Iran, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Palestine, Poland, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Siam, South Africa, Venezuela and Wales.
